Goa nightclub fire incident

Goa Nightclub Fire Incident

The Luthra brothers are wanted in connection with a devastating fire at their nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, that resulted in 25 deaths, mostly from smoke inhalation in the basement. The police investigation has uncovered numerous safety violations at the establishment:

The club was allegedly operating without proper licenses and safety clearances; its local government (panchayat) license had expired.

The fire was reportedly caused by a fire show involving fireworks or sparklers, which ignited flammable decor.

The premises lacked sufficient fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and alarms, and had only one narrow exit, which hampered rescue efforts.

Legal Status and Detention

Saurabh (40) and Gaurav (44) Luthra fled India on December 7, hours after the fire broke out, flying to Phuket, Thailand.

Charges: They face serious charges including injury causing death, manslaughter, and murder, for allegedly organizing the fire show without proper safety measures.

Detention: An Interpol Blue Corner notice was issued against them, and their passports were suspended by Indian authorities, making them undocumented foreigners in Thailand. This allowed Thai police to detain them on December 12, 2025, in Phuket.

Bail Rejected: A Delhi court dismissed their pleas for transit anticipatory bail, rejecting their claims that they were on a pre-planned business trip to Thailand and not responsible for day-to-day operations.

Deportation: Indian and Thai authorities are coordinating to deport the brothers to India, a process expected to be quicker than a formal extradition. A Goa Police team has been sent to Phuket to facilitate their return.

A third co-owner and investor, Ajay Gupta, was arrested in Delhi and is currently in police custody in Goa. Several staff members have also been arrested.
