Trapit Bansal

Trapit Bansal is a prominent Indian-American artificial intelligence (AI) researcher who gained international attention in July 2025 for joining Meta's Superintelligence Labs with a reported compensation package and signing bonus valued at approximately $100 million (₹800–₹854 crore). 

Career and Contributions

OpenAI: Prior to joining Meta, Bansal was a highly influential researcher at OpenAI, where he worked closely with co-founder Ilya Sutskever. He is credited as a co-creator of OpenAI o1 reasoning model, which significantly advanced AI's logical capabilities.

Meta (Superintelligence Labs): He was personally recruited by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as part of an aggressive talent war to build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Previous Experience: His professional journey includes research internships at other tech giants, including Google, Microsoft, and Facebook (now Meta), as well as a stint as an analyst at Accenture early in his career. 

Educational Background

IIT Kanpur: Graduated in 2012 with an integrated Bachelors and Masters degree in Mathematics and Statistics.

University of Massachusetts Amherst: Obtained a Master of Science and a PhD in Computer Science (2015–2021). His doctoral research focused on deep learning, meta-learning, and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

IISc Bangalore: Completed a research internship at the Indian Institute of Science, specializing in Bayesian modeling.

Bansal’s move to Meta is cited as a landmark moment in the AI talent war, highlighting the extreme measures tech companies are taking to secure top-tier researchers.
